Either way, these beaches are a great way to explore Northumberland and the surrounding area!

 

Bamburgh Beach

 

Bamburgh has to feature on our list of the best beaches in Northumberland. Whether you’re fancying a stroll along the golden sands or taking a trip to the iconic Bamburgh Castle, there’s plenty to see and do. 

 

It’s the perfect spot for long walks, and the shallow waters are ideal for paddling if you’ve got young children. There’s also free parking available at the castle end (£5 all-day at the main car park).

 

Nearby pubs and cafes:

 

  • The Middle Inn – This is a traditional pub with hearty meals and local ales located just a 5-minute walk from the beach
  • The Potted Lobster – As an award-winning seafood restaurant, this serves fresh local catches and delicious seafood
  • Wyndenwell Café – A cosy spot which is perfect for light lunches and homemade cakes

Seahouses

 

Just a short drive from Bamburgh, you’ll find Seahouses Beach. Here there’s lots of arcades for the kid in case of a rainy day, as well as ice cream shops galore! As a working harbor beach, there are also boat trips to the Farne Islands if you want to explore the coast further. 

 

There’s ample parking too but you do have to pay and display.

  • The Olde Ship Inn – This is a must-visit as it offers a cosy, maritime vibe with excellent fish and chips
  • Elan Pizzeria – Enjoy wood-fired pizzas with harbor views

Alnmouth Beach

 

Moving to Alnmouth beach. This is a wide, expansive cost with lots of colourful seaside houses making the perfect backdrop. It’s also great for wild swimming and accessible via a short path from the village.

 

It’s also a dog friendly beach making it the perfect day for the whole family! Either choose a picnic spot along the sand or take a trip to one of the restaurants below.

Craster Beach

 

Craster beach is famous for its views of Dunstanburgh Castle as well as its long coastal walks. Visitors can also explore the fishing village of Craster, renowned for its smokehouse where the famous Craster kippers are still prepared using traditional methods.

 

There’s lots of opportunities for some great photos, especially as the sun is setting. 

 

Note – there is limited parking in the village so you’ll have to plan your day carefully if you’re going on a weekend or during the school holidays.

Druridge Bay

 

Druridge bay boasts several miles of unspoiled sandy beach with dunes and a country park, making it perfect for families and couples looking for a relaxed day out.

 

The bay is also popular with water sports, offering great conditions for surfing and paddleboarding if you’re feeling more adventurous!

 

Aside from the coast, nearby attractions include the Druridge Bay Country Park with its visitor center and nature trails – perfect for wildlife spotting and picnicking.

 

In terms of parking, there are several car parks along the coastline including the main car park at the country park.

Holy Island (Lindisfarne)

 

Holy Island is a must-visit if you’re exploring Northumberland. With its spiritual heritage, 360 degrees coastal views, and quaint shops, it’s a great place to spend your afternoon whilst soaking up a little history. 

Accessible only at low tide via causeway, this beach offers a unique experience that combines adventure with tranquility.

 

Note – Check tide times before visiting; you don’t want to be stranded!

Beadnell Bay

 

With a horseshoe-shaped bay, Beadnell is a popular choice for watersports including windsurfing and kitesurfing.

 

The picturesque lime kilns at the southern end of the bay also add a sense of industrial heritage and the nearby village offers traditional pubs and cafes for refreshments after a day by the sea (some of which are listed below).

 

It’s also one for the whole family as it’s dog-friendly all year-round. With ample parking available, Beadnall Bay makes the perfect day trip.

Low Newton Beach

 

Low Newton Beach is nestled in a charming fishing village, offering a quieter alternative to Northumberland’s busier coastlines. The sheltered bay is perfect for couples looking to rewind or for families wanting a peaceful seaside experience away from the crowds.

 

If you’re visiting Low Newton Beach then you have to visit the renowned Ship Inn, positioned right on the beach. This serves delicious local food and their own Newton Brewery ales with sea views thrown in!

There’s also excellent coastal walks to nearby Dunstanburgh Castle that make it an ideal base for exploring this part of Northumberland.
