Brinkburn Priory & River Coquet Walk

This walk is perfect for all ages, taking you through the peaceful woodland along the River Coquet. This walk leads you to Brinkburn Priory, a 12th century monastery letting you step back in time. There’s lots of places to have a packed lunch whilst enjoying a relaxing stroll through the countryside.
If you’re bored of the packed lunch, why not head to The Running Fox which is nearby in Felton. With lots of hearty lunch options, there’s no better way to round off the afternoon. Cragside if also only a short drive away if you’re looking to venture out further.
Simonside Hills Circular
Length: 8.2 miles
Difficulty: Moderate-hard
Located just 10 miles west of Rothbury, this route wakes you up to Simonside’s rocky ridge offering stunning views of Northumberland. Be sure to wear some good walking shoes for this one as you’ll be walking through a mixture of moorland, forest, and rocky edges. If you like a challenge and you’re geared up for a longer walk, this is the perfect option.
After your walk, it’s time to refuel at one of the many cafes in the area such as Bewick’s Kitchen & Coffee House in Rothbury. Known for its stylish country cuisine, it’s a great way to finish a day of walking with a hearty meal. There’s also Cragside House and Gardens nearby, both offering woodland trails whilst taking in some history.
Cragside Estate Walk

This walk is a great choice for families and experienced walkers alike as there’s a mix of easy and moderate trails depending on your ability level. It also means you can choose how long you want to walk, as you might not want to be out the whole day! Whilst this walking trail is stunning all year round, it’s particularly beautiful in spring and autumn.
Sturdy footwear is also recommended as some routes have steeper inclines and some uneven terrain. That said, there’s so much to enjoy on this route, from picturesque lakes to fascinating history.
Alnwick to Alnmouth Riverside Walk
Length: 6 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
This riverside trail starts in Alnwick and leads you along the River Aln for six miles before finishing at the seaside village of Almnouth. Along your route, you can expect to see green hills, historic woodland, and lots of wildlife. Especially since you’ll be walking by the water’s edge, you could see herons or even otters on your travels.
The destination of this walk is stunning, as you can grab a hot chocolate at Alnmouth beach or take a dip if you’re feeling brave! Warkworth Castle is only a short drive away if you’re wanting to venture out further while soaking up some history.
Thrunton Woods & Coe Crags Walk

Difficulty: Moderate
Thrunton Woods, located just 7 miles north of Alnwick offers different forest trails with great views of the Cheviot Hills. Combining the dense woodland with open spaces, this makes for a perfect outdoor experience.
The route is accessible all year round and is fairly easy in terms of difficulty level. There are some inclines so be careful if you’re walking with smaller children, but mostly it’s a nice route.
There are lots of places to refuel afterwards nearby, such as The Village Inn Longframlington which serves real pub grub with a cosy atmosphere.
Hauxley Nature Reserve

Hauxley Nature Reserve is just a short 15-minute drive from Longframlington and offers a peaceful walk combining both the coast and woodlands.
The 3-mile loop trail is perfect for all ages and abilities, as it only takes an hour or two out of your afternoon. With a range of wildlife and scenic countryside views, you can’t ask for much more. This makes it an ideal choice for a family outing as it’s something everyone can enjoy. It’s then time for some well-deserved lunch as Craster is not too far away. Here you can soak up coastal views and enjoy famous Craster kippers.
Breamish Valley & Ingram Woods
Length: 5 miles
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Situated 20 minutes from Longframlington, the Breamish Valley offers a charming walk through the countryside, spanning a 5-mile route. Following the River Breamish, you’ll enjoy views of the surrounding hills and ancient villages with plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife along the way.
You can also head to the nearby Ingram Village where you’ll find traditional pubs to unwind and relax with some hearty pub grub. If you’re looking to extend your adventure some more, you can explore the Ingram Valley further or visit the Ingram Visitor Centre to learn about the area’s history and wildlife.

Felton to Weldon Bridge Riverside Walk

This walk begins in Felton before leading to the River Coquet towards Weldon Bridge. On route, you’ll journey through peaceful riverside paths and woodland areas, making for a great day out in the Northumberland countryside. You might even spot some wildlife if you’re lucky!
You’ll also be able to stop for a well-deserved refreshment at The Anglers Arms in Weldon Bridge which serves up delicious sandwiches. On your return journey, you can take in views of the river, with plenty of spots for a picnic along the way.
